Sir Moses Montefiore was a British Jewish philanthropist and lobbyist, who devoted his life to helping Jews around the world. In the course of his long life – he lived to the age of 100 years – he received tributes and many honorary decorations, one of them the title of knight for his activities for the oppressed Jewish people around the world
Mishkenot Sha'ananim was established in 1860. Its establishment, with the initiative and support of Moses Montefiore, marked the beginning of an era outside of the walls in Jerusalem. The houses of Mishkenot Sha'ananim today, after renovation and preservation, serve as conference and music centers, as well as guest houses.

Montefiore restaurant was established in the year 2000. The restaurant was established so that people from all over Israel and the world would be able to come to the heart of the first neighborhood in the city and enjoy high quality food made from local ingredients, while enjoying the unique view. Montefiore restaurant is a combination of old and new, modern and ancient, history and future. The design merges the atmosphere and the history of the neighborhood, together with Contemporary Modernism. The food at the restaurant combines Italian heritage with innovative combinations of flavours and cooking methods.
